Sample topics to cover may include an overview of nutrient cycle; an introduction to eutrophication and harmful algal blooms (HABs; e.g., cyanoblooms, red tide); adverse health, environmental and economic impacts of HABs; an overview of eutrophication prevention and control techniques (e.g., nutrient management in farming and other eco-friendly agricultural techniques, responsible life practices, constructed wetlands, biological and chemical nutrient control methods); an overview of HAB-related federal and state legislations and initiatives; a “Data Dive” to inform the audience about different HAB monitoring databases at the international, national, and state levels; and hands-on activities involving phosphate concentration measurements in fresh and treated natural freshwater samples (teachers can bring their own water samples collected from ponds, lakes, rivers, canals, etc.) using commercially available test kits.
