Air Pollution: Types, Sources, and Measurement Techniques

Sample topics to cover may include historical air pollution problems; air pollution types (e.g., gaseous, particulate), sources (e.g., power plants, waste management facilities), and their health and environmental impacts (e.g., smog, odor issues); relevant legislation aimed at tackling air pollution (e.g., Clean Air Act); ambient and indoor air quality; and engaging participants in hands-on activities to measure the concentration of different air pollutants. 

Learning objectives or key takeaways:

  1. Trace the historical evolution of major air pollution events to understand how past crises shaped modern environmental awareness.
  2. Classify different types of air pollutants, distinguishing between gaseous hazards and particulate matter 
  3. Identify point and non-point sources of pollution, including power plants, waste management facilities, and transportation networks.
  4. Analyze the physiological health effects of air pollution and its broader environmental impacts, such as smog and localized odor issues.
  5. Interpret core components of landmark environmental policy.
  6. Compare the primary sources of ambient (outdoor) versus indoor air quality.
  7. Operate standard air monitoring equipment to accurately measure and record concentrations of different air pollutants.
