Rather than relying on traditional approaches, educators explored how to create student-centered classrooms where curiosity, reasoning, problem-solving, and meaningful thinking are at the heart of learning. Participants explored how moving beyond traditional approaches can create student-centered classrooms where mathematical thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and meaningful discourse take center stage.
Through hands-on activities, educators explored strategies from Math Workshop and Building Thinking Classrooms, including reasoning routines, learning stations, student grouping, task and share, focus lessons, and small-group instruction. Experiencing these strategies as learners gave participants an opportunity to consider how intentional classroom structures can build a strong mathematical community and help all students make sense of mathematics.
The experience also provided time for educators to collaborate, design instructional activities, and consider how they can bring these approaches into their own classrooms. By creating learning environments where students are encouraged to think, explain their reasoning, collaborate, and reflect, educators are helping to change the story about mathematics—and create more engaging, empowering, and meaningful learning experiences for every student.
