Change the Story: Effective Science Instruction and Learning for K-12 Science Educators
Saturday, Aug 22, 2026
What happens when science class becomes less about telling students what to know and more about helping them figure out what is happening and why? On August 22, K–12 science educators gathered through the Stiles-Nicholson STEM Teacher Academy and the Center for Educational Strategy & Innovation to explore that shift through Change the Story: Effective Science Instruction and Learning—a professional learning experience centered on inquiry, sensemaking, and the practices that help students think like scientists.
Rather than simply discussing effective science instruction, educators experienced it. They explored ways to surface student thinking, develop and use models, analyze data, and build explanations from evidence. Learning stations, collaborative investigations, discourse, and reflection provided opportunities to consider how authentic science practices can move students from passively receiving information to actively making sense of phenomena and constructing their own understanding.
The day ultimately challenged educators to rethink what meaningful science learning can look like. When students have opportunities to wonder, investigate, revise their thinking, argue from evidence, and explain their ideas, science becomes more than a collection of facts—it becomes a way of understanding the world. That is the story we want to help educators change.
