Monday, Feb 03, 2025
STEM Talent Search: Discovering and Nurturing Tomorrow's Innovators will delve into the exciting process of identifying and fostering the abilities of the STEM stars of tomorrow, with a particular focus on underrepresented student populations who are too often overlooked and mis-identified. The day's program will begin with a comprehensive discussion on defining STEM talent and understanding the societal and cultural barriers that may deter underrepresented students from pursuing STEM fields. Educators will then learn strategies for identifying and nurturing STEM talent in these student populations, gaining an understanding of the myriad ways STEM aptitude may present itself. A crucial part of this process will be recognizing the importance of culturally responsive teaching practices in encouraging STEM talent. The participants will be introduced to strategies for creating culturally-responsive STEM curricula, along with understanding the role of cultural competence in nurturing STEM talent. The concluding segment of the workshop will be dedicated to engagement techniques and creating supportive environments for underrepresented students in STEM. It will provide strategies for motivation, resources for nurturing talent, the importance of mentorship, and guidance on building an inclusive STEM learning environment. The workshop wraps up with a review of key concepts, strategies learned, and resources for continued learning and support. This immersive and enriching workshop will feature an esteemed guest expert panel, including the Dean of College of Science, Dean of College of Education, Professor of Science & Environmental Education, and a Professor of Engineering Education. Participants will be encouraged to leverage this expertise to create an action plan for implementing these strategies in their classrooms, setting the stage for the next generation of STEM innovators.
