This workshop is proudly offered through the Center for Educational Strategy & Innovation at Florida Atlantic Laboratory Schools, a hub for advancing research-driven educational practices.
Join us for an exciting Professional Development experience where you'll explore the beautiful Grassy Waters Nature Area by canoe or on foot, gathering valuable data and immersing yourself in science journaling. This workshop is designed to introduce educators to two innovative types of student journaling: everyday science journals and surprise journals, along with the classic nature journals. Interactive sessions, discussions, and practical exercises will enrich your understanding and application of journaling techniques, equipping you with strategies to nurture literacy skills, curiosity, and critical thinking in your students.
During this immersive journey, you will:
- Collect Data in Nature: Engage in hands-on activities to gather data using tools such as magnifying glasses, binoculars, and possibly other relevant technological devices.
- Explore Science Journaling: Learn the art of maintaining everyday science journals to document knowledge, skills, and attitudes, as well as surprise journals that capture unexpected learning moments.
- Nature Journaling: Discover interdisciplinary approaches to nature journaling, fostering a deeper connection with the environment and enhancing observational skills.
Objectives include:
- Understanding Everyday Science: Familiarize yourself with essential concepts of everyday science, encompassing knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
- Learning from Unexpected Moments: Embrace the educational value of surprise journals, which highlight spontaneous learning experiences.
- Interdisciplinary Nature Journaling: Explore how nature journaling can integrate various subjects, promoting a holistic learning experience.
- Versatile Journaling Practices: Discover the flexibility of both student and teacher journals in meeting diverse pedagogical goals.
- Throughout the seminar, you'll be provided with all necessary journaling materials, including colored pencils and other creative supplies. Be sure to come prepared with suitable outdoor clothing to fully engage in nature observation activities.
