The COSMOS Educational Toolkit: Exploring Wireless Technology to Facilitate the Creation of Lessons and Labs is by invitation only attendance for selected SNSTA applicant teachers. If you are interested in applying, please email: SNSTA@FAU.EDU for an application link.
The workshop is focused on a hands-on introduction to the COSMOS toolkit, which was designed to assist STEM teachers in developing lessons and labs related to wireless communication technology. The COSMOS toolkit features over one hundred pre-made lessons and labs created by fellow 6-12th grade teachers for Math, Science, and Computer Science courses. The interface is simple and easy to use for both educators and students, and can be accessed at school and at home. This workshop will introduce the mechanics of wireless signals, explain how information is encoded into electromagnetic waves, and provide participants with an understanding of how modern communication systems are implemented. Participants will have an opportunity to explore the COSMOS Educational Toolkit, establish account access, and access supplementary materials. Participants will then undertake four hands-on labs centered around Bluetooth signals and an Arduino microcontroller. Finally, participants will work together to develop their own materials designed to fit within their curriculum for implementation during the Spring term. The COSMOS toolkit was developed as a partnership between Columbia University, New York University, Rutgers University, AT&T, the National Science Foundation, and the City of New York.
